Welcome to rp_discuss. This post is where you'll find information on what we consider topics for discussion for this community. You'll also find more elaboration on the rules listed in the profile.

If you have a question that is not in this entry, feel free to reply to this post with them and we will edit the post as the questions are asked.

Example of a GOOD FAQ's question:
What kind of storyline would you like to see in an original fantasy game?

Example of a BAD FAQ's question:
What is role play?

Rule Explanations
Q. What is rp_discuss about?
A. Have you always wanted to ask a question about role playing but haven't found the right community to ask it in? Have you wanted to gather ideas about a role play you want to put together, but the communities you've found don't really allow it? Then rp_discuss is the place for you. Here you can ask the Raging RP questions you have about plots, characters, and role playing style.

The idea of this community came from there being no really appropriate place to discuss various topics about role playing. If there are any, they're inactive communities. What we decided is to create a community with an environment for those curious role players who have ideas and want to share them.

Q. What do we consider as snark and flaming?
A. Snark is basically any sort of unneeded sarcasm directed toward someone. Flaming is making an offensive statement.

Q. What are the rules when discussing sex and violence?
A. While we generally want to keep this community at a G-PG level, there are probably those who are going to have questions reguarding sex and violence in games. With that said, here's the deal:
-Place all content having to do with sex and violence under an LJ cut, no matter how short the post is going to be.
-Place a warning in your post before the LJ cut so that those who do not want to read it do not have to.
-If you do not do this, we will comment and ask you to do so. We will also friend the post. If for any reason we find that you have not put a warning in your post or placed it under an LJ cut, the post will be deleted.

Q. What kinds of things can you provide for the members?
A. We can give you ideas/feedback, offer advice, and answer basic questions about role playing. We come from different role playing backgrounds and have a lot of things to offer you.

Q. What can this community offer to us in terms of activity?
A. Well, that's partially up to you. While we do hope that you'll make posts in the community asking for help, we do realize that you're not always going to have something to ask for help about. So what we're hoping is that we can come up with some weekly prompts of some sort to help keep the community active.

Q. If we have any ideas for activities, what do we do?
A. Reply to one of the posts made by one of the mods (jediknightmuse, dieinahole, and prettygothgirl) and ask. Or if needed, we'll make a post where you can give your suggestions.

Just wondering about the rules on promoting things and can't see anywhere more sensible to ask than here (though I'm not sure how frequent this question would be) I can see that I shouldn't promote myself as a player or my community, that's fine - what about real world conventions?

Would it be okay to post questions like "Anyone going to Origins this year?" "I've got the money to attend one RP convention, which is the best?" "(link) Here are the DMs running at dragonmeet, anyone know if any of them run a particularly good game?" etc.

Mmm...-I- certainly don't see why not. Since I'm currently having umm...conflict of interests, sort of, with the other mod, my suggestion would be to ask the other mod. :| Personally I'd say "go to it," since it's pretty on topic (and I am curious about conventions as well, since I've never been to one before and I want to go) for the community, but I'm not 100% positive. :| Sorry if that isn't of much help to you. It should just be a simple yes or no.

I think those questions would be acceptable because the places would be in the context of the post. Really, it's all about the context. This isn't blatant advertisement for any particular RP conventions and I would be interested in hearing about them since I've never been to one. *shrugs*

I've been informed by livejournal that RPing celebrities (or any non-fictional person), even with disclaimers, is against their Terms of Service. Since there is nothing about this in the community userinfo or FAQ, could you please add it?

this seems more like a general announcement thing rather than something that would be in the FAQ or the userinfo. If you would like to make such and announcement go right ahead, however there are a lot of celebrity LJ RPs out there. Or I can, based upon your information do so.

Well I came here under the assumption that celeb RPers were welcome. But if it's against the LJ terms of service, what's the point? I was just thinking it would be useful to say in the FAQ that the reason there aren't many celebrity RPers in this community is because it's against the TOS.

this isn't a comm where one Role Plays... this is a comm where one discusses about role play. And perhaps there are celeb role players who come here to talk about celeb roleplaying. I don't see where that would be against the TOS if they're doing it say on greatest journal or message boards or over instant messenger services.

The impression I'm getting is that you came to this community to Role Play. Now.. if you can think of way to phrase your concerns in the form of a question I may be able to add it to the FAQ. Though why I should is beyond me, since we aren't an announcement bulletin for LiveJournal. I still think this would be a good discussion topic given the situation.

sure, we can do that.

I'm sorry I didn't ever see your question. I know there are a few communities like that, mun_vs_mun and pleasepickme. For this type of community though, i think the more sources the better because hey, different places ask for different things right. :D

I'll add you into the user info. Thanks so much!

you're welcome!

well, you're forms look pretty good. They made me giggle. Like I said, everyone has their own ways of advertising and since different people want to know different things, lots of people like to advert themselves all over the place. That way you can get a clearer picture of who wants what and honestly, who is interested in RPing now, versus several months ago. :-/

Good luck with it!

Would it be against the rules to ask people for a little help with an rpg I'm working on, here? I mean like this: http://wyndhover.livejournal.com/144889.html It's not an ad, but it's not exactly a discussion, either. Whaddaya think?

Oh! I've done that type of thing before (what your entry is about). It is tedious, but very enjoyable if you take it in steps. *nod nod*

It's not at all an advertisement. It's more like a discussion of mechanics. Go right ahead and post it here if you'd like. I have no objections.
